Adjustment Layers Exercise
The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.
With the adjustment layers, you can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient, and is an absolute must-know. |

Step 1
Open Photoshop (remember you will use a different procedure if you're using Chromebook or personal computer at home) here at school in lab 21 at East Campus.

Step 2
Next, to bring up a specific adjustment layer...
Select the Adjustment Layer icon from the Layers Palette, and choose one from the menu:

Select Brightness & Contrast to start.
The image looked a little dark in the shadow areas, and I wanted to see some more details. Try this yourself. Put the numbers in just like you see in the screen shot below:

Step 4
Next do the same procedure clicking on the Adjustment Layer icon and select Hue/Saturation
Increase the color saturation to +50
Next do the same procedure clicking on the Adjustment Layer icon and select Hue/Saturation
Increase the color saturation to +50

Next, click on the Adjustment Layer icon again and select Color Balance to the colors. See the settings in the screenshot and make yours:
Cyan - Red to -9
Magenta - Green to -2
Yellow - Blue to - 11
Next, click on the Adjustment Layer icon again and select Color Balance to the colors. See the settings in the screenshot and make yours:
Cyan - Red to -9
Magenta - Green to -2
Yellow - Blue to - 11

Now add another Adjustment layer > Gradient Map
Now add another Adjustment layer > Gradient Map

Here is the resulting image with all 3 Adjustment Layers added.
Image 1 below - Some type of gradient will be placed on your image. It might not be the red to white like the one seen below

Image 3 below - Click on the gear icon and select Photographic Toning or any other gradients from the drop down list

Select the Sepia Blue 2 gradient - by clicking on the icon

Finally add a Curves adjustment layer to the image making it have more overall contrast.

Save this to Your Google Drive folder
File Menu > Save As
