Computer Art 1 Syllabus

Students will learn how to use computer and art software. However, be aware that: THE ART YOU MAKE ON THE COMPUTER WILL REFLECT THE SKILLS AND DESIGN CAPABILITIES YOU HAVE AS AN ARTIST, since it isn't the computer which is making the art but the user. Good art practice and design knowledge are still the foundation of any art. This is an art course that requires creative effort in addition to learning the technology.
It is my job to teach and assist in your learning. When you need help please ask for it, but you must try to become independent in high school. Don’t expect me to do your work for you. I will help after you try first and have difficulty.

Assessment
Evaluating classroom behavior, computer assignments, reading assignments, quizzes, and final exam will determine grades.
Projects
All projects will be assessed with the following criteria and other specific criteria pertaining to that project. These additional criteria will be stressed when talking about the projects.
Grade Scale
Exceptional aesthetics/content + flawless craft =A
Adequate aesthetics/content + flawless craft =B
Exceptional aesthetics/content + adequate craft =B
Adequate aesthetics/content + adequate craft =C
Adequate aesthetics/content + flawed craft =D
Poor content/poor design + adequate craft =D
Anything less than adequate in craft =F
100% - 90% = A
89% - 80% = B
79% - 70% = C
69% - 60% = D
59% - 0% = F

- Follow classroom Rules and Procedures. (see below)
- Pay attention and listen when I go over instructions and demo steps for projects. When you need help please ask, but don’t expect me to do the work for you. I will help after you try first and have are having difficulty.
- Use the class website to help complete your assignments.
- Put your name, and class period on everything you turn in.
- If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what we covered and when you can make it up. Always check the class website for information on projects we worked on from the day(s) you were absent.
- Use your Porter Planner and the class calendar on our website to keep track of when projects are due.
- Apply yourself fully in order to maximize learning. Give your best effort..
Assessment

- Corel Painter 17 (digital drawing and painting)
- Adobe Photoshop CC (image editing)
- Adobe Illustrator CC (vector drawing & illustration)
Classroom Rules
- Respect the teacher, substitute teachers, other students, and the equipment you are using in class. Remember that RESPECT is EARNED.
- Don't be LATE to class. You will get 2 free tardies per semester. After that, tardies will be a REFERRAL.
- There is absolutely no food, candy, gum or drinks allowed in the lab. Your 1st offense will result in a warning; a second will be a REFERRAL!
- Cursing, or inappropriate language is NOT ALLOWED in class.
- Phones are NOT ALLOWED to be used or visible in school. Any student with a phone out during class time will receive a REFERRAL and the device will be given to the Dean. NO WARNING GIVEN, NO EXCEPTIONS!
- NO on-line music is allowed, or video sites (YouTube) are allowed UNLESS these are given by the Teacher for class work.
- NO browsing the web, or playing video games on any electronic device during class. Any student doing this during class time will receive a REFERRAL and the device will be given to the Dean. NO WARNING, NO EXCEPTIONS!
Classroom Procedures
- Each assignment will have a due date listed on the Calendar section of our class site. Projects that need to be printed will be noted in the directions, and must be placed in correct class basket in order to receive credit.
- If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what we covered and when you can make it up.
- Haiku Learning will be used for many assignments, assessments. Haiku discussions and the dropbox (digital submission of assignments) component will also be explored. NOTE (Assignments submitted thru Haiku will be due on a specific day and time noted on calendar of class site. No partial or late points are given. Failure to get the assignment turned in will result in an F for that project. Exceptions for extended absence approved by the school will be made as needed.)
- Some Written work (questions you type out) will be printed and put in the class basket in order to receive credit.
- It is your responsibility to LISTEN and pay attention when I give directions. I will NOT keep repeating them. Use the class website to review project directions and steps, rubrics for grading, and due dates for projects.
