- What kinds of things do you see in the work? • How would you describe them?
Step Two: Analysis
How is it organized? What elements & principles of art are used?
- Consider the significant Art Elements that are present in this artwork (Line, Texture, Shape, Color, Form, Value, and Space) and describe them. DON'T JUST LIST THE ONES YOU SEE, DESCRIBE THEM!
- In this step consider the most significant Art Principles that were used in the artwork (Balance, Contrast, Pattern, Variety, Emphasis, Proportion, Movement, Rhythm, and Harmony). Describe how and where the artist used them to organize the elements.

What is the artist trying to communicate?
Describe how the work makes you think or feel:
- Describe the expressive qualities you find in the work. What expressive language would you use to describe the qualities (i.e., tragic, ugly, funny)?
- Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced (i.e., analogy or metaphor)?
- How does the work relate to other ideas or events in the world and/or in your other studies?

- What is your judgment about the quality of the artwork? Is the work of high quality? Do you think it was well done? If so, tell me why. If not, tell me why.
- What qualities of the work make you feel it is a success or failure?
- What criteria can you list to help others judge this work?
- How original is the work? Why do you feel this work is original or not original?
