Directions After our introduction on Color Schemes (PDF and Prezi) you will now create 4 different designs based on 4 different color schemes below using Adobe Illustrator. Students will be assessed on using Color Schemes, following directions and their ability to undstand some basic tools and processes in Adobe Illustrator. Art & Design Concepts in this lesson... Using Color Schemes in design If needed for help on the assignment, review the PDF on Color Theory In this project we will be using the following Color Schemes:
Step 1 Open Adobe Illustrator CS3 in the Programs folder > CS6 Step 2 File Menu > Open Step 3 From Computer select the graphics network drive and click OPEN Step 4 Click on Computer Art folder > Exercises Folder > Illustrator > select color-schemes-designs.ai and then click OPEN. This is what the document looks like when you open it. Make sure the visibility of all other Layers are OFF. This is the bottom layer - circles2 This is the next layer - circles1. Turn OFF circles 2 visibility and Turn on the visibility of this layer (circles 1) to see it. This is the next layer - stripes. Turn on the visibility of this layer to see it. Turn OFF - circles 1 visibility and Turn on the visibility of this layer (stripes) to see it. This is the top layer - abstract shapes. Turn on the visibility of this layer to see it. Turn OFF stripes visibility and Turn on the visibility of this layer (abstract shapes) to see it. |

Step 5 Window Menu > Adobe Labs > Adobe Kuler The Kuler Palette opens Type the word - Monochromatic (first color scheme) in the box like below: Monochromatic - Colors that are shade or tint variations of the same hue. Click the arrow to the right to see more themes Add one of these Color Schemes to the Swatches Palette to use to color your design by doing the following: Click on one you set of colors you like and then click the Add selected theme to swatches button These colors are then added to use in Illustrator in the Swatches Palette Click this button to see the Swatches Palette Step 6 Select the Live Paint bucket tool to add your color in Illustrator. Press the Letter K on your Keyboard Select your color (click on one of the small squares in the swatches palette) move accross the design (areas will turn red as you move around) and then click with the mouse and apply the color to a specific area of the design using this color scheme (use all 5 colors) on the bottom layer design -circles2 |
Step 7 Turn off the layer visibility for this layer - circles2 and turn on the visibility of the next layer-circles1 Repeat this process of getting a new color scheme in the Kuler palette (type out Analogous this time), adding it to the Swatches Palette and use the Live Paint bucket to add these colors on this layer. Analogous - Those colors located adjacent to each other on a color wheel |
Step 8
Repeat these same steps for layer 3- stripes (Complementary Color scheme)
- Complementary - Those colors across from each other on a color wheel.
and layer 4-abstract shapes (Triad Color scheme)
- Triad - Three hues equally positioned on a color wheel

Save to your student (Z: network drive) folder when done as YOUR LAST NAME_ColorTheoryDesigns.ai
Then save to the correct V: drive folder as YOUR LAST NAME_ColorTheoryDesigns.ai

Now complete using Gradients instead of solid colors to the design found below.
(Right-click on the image and select SAVE LINK AS from drop-down menu)
Then, use the Live Paint bucket to add the Gradient, just as we did the sold colors earlier.
