Digital Painting Techniques
The aim of this painting exercise is to explore the qualities of the ARTIST OILS and BLENDING BRUSHES in Painter. Using the first set of blank spaces below create an 8 step value scale of grays using the ARTIST OILS brush.
In the second set of blank spaces create an 8 step value of any color you wish using the ARTIST OILS brush. Then on top of the color use the BLENDER BRUSHS to blend the colors together creating a seamless blend from dark to light.
Finally, using the ARTIST OILS brush again select 3 colors and practice in the sphere trying to create 3D form created thru shading. Start with a very dark color and fill the sphere in completely. Next, take a lighter value of this color and paint in like the example at around 25% opacity. On top of this paint in with a completely different color the highlight spot.
Use the BLENDER BRUSHES to blend the colors together creating a seamless blend. Add in final highlights and reflected light, then a cast shadow.

Do the same for the sphere shape at the bottom. Place in your light source direction, and then the values of your chosen color. Add a cast shadow on the correct side of the sphere. |
It will now look like the example below.
