Layer Basics Exercise
This exercise will teach you how to work with Magic Eraser tool, Move tool and learn how to combine these two images together in Photoshop using Layers.
Step 1
Open Photoshop (remember you will use a different procedure if you're using Chromebook or personal computer at home) here at school in lab 21 at East Campus.
Step 2
File Menu > Open and open both Bald Eagle Portrait.jpg and flag.jpg images. These photos are available on the Google Classroom page to download and use for this exercise.
Step 3
Click in the eagle image select the Magic Eraser Tool (Hold down the Shift Key Hit on your Keyboard and then hit the letter E on your Keyboard 2 times to get the magic eraser) and click on the brown background color of the eagle image.Do this multiple times if needed to erase the background the best you can.
This selects all the pixels that are the same color and removes them. This tool works well in this case because the background is the same color throughout. If the background were different colors the Magic Eraser tool would not be a good choice.
Step 4
Select the Move tool
Click in the center of the eagle, hold down the mouse button, hold down the Shift key on the keyboard, drag and drop the eagle to the flag image and let go of the shift key and mouse button at the same time.
Step 5
The eagle should now be on the flag image like the photo below.
Step 6
File Menu > Save As
Save this to Your Google Drive folder as Photoshop Layer Basics
Turn into Google Classroom when finished with this exercise.
